Born 1943, Hyōgo Prefecture
As a pioneering pupil of master ceramists Tomimoto Kenkichi (1886-1963), Kondō Yūzō (1902-85), Fujimoto Nōdō (1919-92) and Kiyomizu Rokubey VII (1922-2006), Matsuda Yuriko has taken the tradition of polychrome decoration on porcelain to new lengths. She creates Nature-based yet hand built forms, often in a humorous vein, but also in an avant-garde fashion. From fruit, vegetables, and landscapes to feet, legs, and behinds, she colorfully and lavishly covers each surface with intricate, decorative patterns. all referencing tradition, including iro-e, kinrande, kutani and sometsuke.
